Åskskyddspotentialutjämningen spelar en särskilt viktig roll för byggnader med ett yttre åskskyddssystem. Detta måste utföras för alla ledande system som leder in i byggnaden från utsidan enligt SS EN 62305-3. Dessutom ska du ta hänsyn till ett EMV-baserat åskskyddszonskoncept enligt SS EN 62305-4 för att skydda känsliga komponenter.
Skyddsanordning mot överspänning delas in i överspänningsskydd mot blixtström, mot överspänning och kombinerat överspänningsskydd. Åskskydds- och kombinerade överspänningsskydd som genomför övergången från åskskyddszon 0A till 1 respektive 0A till 2 omfattas av de högsta kraven gällande avledningsförmåga. Dessa överspänningsskydd måste kunna leda vågformens partiella blixtströmmar 10/350 μs icke-förstörande för att därmed förhindra inträngandet av förstörande partiella blixtströmmar i den elektriska anläggning i en byggnad.
Vid övergången av åskskyddszonen 0B till 1 (respektive underordnat överspänningsskyddet för blixtström vid övergången från åskskyddszon 1 till 2 och högre), sker användningen av överspänningsskydd för att skydda mot överspänningar. Dess uppgift är att ytterligare dämpa restenergin i skyddstegen uppströms såväl som att begränsa överspänningarna som induceras i anläggningen eller själv skapas där.
